Origins of Chinese Restaurants in America – Source and Resource

In almost every city within the country, you’ll discover a Chinese eatery. Why did they start? What made them so popular? We will be looking at all things Chinese in this post.

In this video, we can see that in the years before Chinese restaurants began popping appearing in America in the early 1900s, there was a lot of anti-immigrant attitudes. One of the reasons for this is the Chinese exclusion law that stopped entry from China. Chinese who did make it over Chinese Americans that did make it over did not have a lot of options to pick between when they were looking for jobs, so an enticing choice was opening the restaurant.

The first Chinese restaurants opened around 1950, however, the Chinese dishes we eat in the present didn’t gain popularity up until the middle of the century. The reason for this is that , as increasing numbers of Chinese migrants arrived in America they would each put their own distinct spin on food. Because immigrants would come from different regions of China and may have slightly different cuisines, this would be the case.
