The Tradition of Birthday Cards

It seems like in the twenty first century traditions are being thrown out all of the time. With all of the technology we have, it is easy to forget traditions that seem time consuming. One tradition I hope we never lose is that of giving birthday cards. Snail mail might be called snail mail for a reason, but there is nothing like the feeling of receiving birthday cards in the mail. Of course technology has given us a variant of birthday cards too. Online birthday cards are easy to send, and usually free too. But the appeal of online birthday cards is not the same, at least in my opinion. I think online birthday cards have their uses, but definitely go with the traditional ones for loved ones. Online birthday cards are perfect for co-workers, because they might already be receiving plenty of birthday cards from their loved ones. Online birthday cards are also great for acquaintances, or perhaps for someone whose address you do not know. Say you know someone’s email address but not their home address. This is a perfect chance to send them an online birthday card. Then at least they know that you are thinking about them, and have not forgotten their birthday. Joint birthday cards are also a great idea for a large group, such as the office. Large birthday cards are fun, and they give a whole bunch of people a chance to write down little well wishing statements to the birthday boy or girl. I hope that the tradition of birthday cards is one that we do not easily throw out, because writing “happy birthday” on someone’s facebook wall is not nearly as special as receiving birthday cards in the mail. Remember that the next time one of your loved ones has a birthday. It might be quick and easy to use online birthday cards or write a brief message on their facebook, but go with the real thing. You and your loved will be happier in the end.
